The Spirit: Another Sin City
By James Streett on Friday, October 23rd, 2009So a while ago I saw the movie “The Spirit”, and I must say I enjoyed it even though for a majority of the film I had absolutely no clue what the heck was going on. The story is pretty much like this: there is the vigilante known as “The Spirit” who pretty much will not die no matter how badly Samuel L. Jackson’s character beats the shit out of him. You later found out why, but not without the movie confusing you to the point that no matter how much narcotics you ingest you still won’t get it.
After you understand why “The Spirit” is such a superhero, it is a very entertaining movie. Of course as I mentioned before, Samuel L. Jackson plays the villain, calling himself “The Octopus.” He is like he is in every movie, yelling so loudly you would have to have your eardrums incinerated or physically punctured to not hear him. But hey, what the hell would a Samuel L. Jackson movie be without him yelling something like, “I’m tired of these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane.”
Now enough with the two main actors in the film, let’s talk about the hottie females. Really gentlemen, it should have just been one of those late night cinemax specials you stay up late to watch with the volume turned way down low. I mean if you weren’t getting all excited over Eva Mendes partially naked, you must at least have been fantasizing about Scarlett Johansson in some sort of kinky sadomasochist fashion, cause she did dress in mostly a slave and master fashion. But there was also Jamie King’s character that was hot for a Doctor. I wouldn’t mind a physical from her.
The cinematography was interesting; it made the film look very comic book-like. The reason why was that the same people who made “300″ and “Sin City” also did this film. I like the black and white filming with the highlighting on certain colors. Also with this particular movie being made by the same people who brought you “Sin City”, the main character in the movie, “The Spirit“, had the same type of monologue narration that went along with the film. I like when a character describes the situation in a movie. It is sort of like watching those old detective movies with the descriptive narration.
Anyways, this film was confusing to begin with, but if you gave it a long enough amount of time you will come to realize that it is a truly enjoyable film. I would have to categorize this film as one in which you would watch while sick or one when you wanted a fun escape for a few hours so you went to the theatre for a quick roller coaster. Okay, so maybe it was not a roller coaster, like “Alpengeist” in Busch Gardens. But if you are bored one weeknight or just feel like watching something that does not require a lot of attention or emotion like some of those insane chick flicks, go watch “The Spirit”. Trust me, I think you will like it.
