The definition of a goal is a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result. We at Whim believe goals are important to achieve any aspirations one might have in life.
Take all of us RU students for example. Why are we in college? A lot of us probably share the same goals of graduating, getting a degree and then becoming a contributing citizen of society. Whether we realize it or not, we are all on a journey to achieving our long-term goals.
All goals don’t have to be long-term, however. To achieve our overarching dreams, we should set smaller goals which keep us on track, and give us a feeling of satisfaction. Presidential candidates don’t start by running for the presidential office; they start smaller, often as a governor or senator. Likewise, when we decide what our dreams are, we should think of smaller achievements which we can achieve to help us get there.
We believe that it is important for everyone to have goals simply because they are the task at hand you are trying to accomplish. Take everyday life for example: every company with a mission statement is essentially telling its customers what they plan on achieving in the transaction — their goal.
We have all grown up hearing the saying that goes, “Shoot for the moon, because even if you miss you will land among the stars.” But where do we cross the line between dreams and goals? We can’t spend our whole life trying to achieve a dream that is unrealistic because we will just be let down in the end. It is important to know the difference between dreams and goals.
We can’t let other people destroy our hopes and dreams either. It’s important to take criticism, but at the same time, we have to decide for ourselves what we want to achieve, and how important our achievements are. No one else should make those decisions for us.
We need to be okay with knowing that we might not ever achieve our dreams, but we can still have them as guidelines to shape our lives. As long as we are continually fulfilling goals to keep us on track, that should be enough to help us lead a successful life.
