Why sports are important

Throughout the semester, we are being mentally tested so often we sometimes forget about our physical health. It’s important to remember that exercise is critical to our overall well-being and health. Exercise has been shown to improve stamina, prevent disease, enhance flexibility, control body weight, develop muscles, and improve the quality of your life.

So what are some ways you can incorporate exercise into your life and have fun while doing it?

Sports are highly competitive, physically engaging and are a great way to stay in shape as well as have fun with friends. There are many different sports you can engage in.

1) Frisbee

An easy activity you can do is throw a Frisbee back and forth with your friends. All you need is a Frisbee and a grassy area wide enough to run around on. Get a group of friends and practice tossing a Frisbee back and forth. See how long you can go without dropping it.

2) Soccer

Another fun and fast-paced game you can play is soccer. Soccer involves running, teamwork and strategy. Get a group of friends and form teams; choose a person to be goalie and start playing. If you can’t get two soccer nets, see if you can use cones or some other objects to indicate goal posts. Of course, you can always kick a ball back and forth with your friends without forming teams.

3) Football

Football is an American classic. Get a group of friends together, create teams and begin playing. All you need is a football. You can always play touch style football where you don’t tackle your opponent, but where’s the fun in that? Make sure you familiarize yourself with the rules before you start playing.

4) Basketball

Basketball is an indoor or outdoor sport. Radford University comes equipped with a basketball court in Peters Hall. Grab a basketball and get your friends together. You can always practice shooting by yourself and all you need is a hoop and a ball. Again be sure to know the rules before you play.

Sports are a great way to exercise while simultaneously having fun with your friends. Remember to be mindful of the risk of injury, stay hydrated, and most importantly remember to have fun!
