Oberhofer: An indie band riding the waves to stardom

When you hear the name Oberhofer, your first instinct might be to say, “Bless you!” However, it’s not a sneeze you’re hearing; it’s the name of an up-and-coming indie band.

Oberhofer is a subgenre-spanning indie band from Brooklyn, Ny. Founder Brad Oberhofer fronts the band, and other members are Matthew Scheiner, Ben Roth, Pete Sustarsic and Dylan Treleven. The band started in 2008 as the self-titled solo recording project of Oberhofer himself. While the lineup of the band itself has gone through multiple changes, the name remains the same because Oberhofer writes all of the music himself.

Their genre is often referred to as “surf pop revival,” and is grouped with similar bands like Best Coast, Surfer Blood, The Growlers and the famed surf rock label Burger Records.

Oberhofer’s current discography includes multiple singles, some self-released and others released through different record labels; an EP, entitled Nostalgia; and one full-length album titled Time Capsules II.

After listening to any track from Time Capsules II, you’ll be wondering why Oberhofer isn’t more famous. With their extremely catchy synth-pop riffs and Beach Boys-esque summer songs, you’ll be hooked from the very second you push play.

There are many standout tracks on the album, “Cruising FDR” is a summer anthem perfect for coasting the highways in the blazing heat with a carful of friends. Another track worth listening to would be the lead single, “o0Oo0Oo0,” which is loaded with distorted guitar riffs and the perfectly catchy chorus of ooohs.

My favorite track on the album would have to be “Haus,” in which Oberhofer charmingly woos the listener with his desires to build a house so they “can be alone.” Oberhofer takes a sweet sentiment and turns it into a happy, bright jam that you will want to sing about building houses at the top of your lungs by the last chorus. This band knows exactly what they are doing with their material, and they do it well.

While the band isn’t currently touring and there’s been no news of an upcoming album release, you can still keep up with the frontman’s musical talent through his Instagram, @bradoberhofer, in which he composes and posts an original 30-second song every day.
