Got energy? Five healthy drink recipes to give you a boost

Everyone’s buzzing about “green drinks” and smoothies, especially as summer grows near and the desire to drop a few pounds intensifies. As a girl trying to get in shape and find healthy drinks to energize me, not only through my classes but through my workouts, I can personally vouch for these recipes that will motivate you to make healthy choices too.

1) Katrine van Wyk’s “Cilantro Fiesta Juice”

I discovered health and fitness expert, Katrine van Wyk’s recipe online, in Prevention magazine’s “10 Green Detox Drinks You Have To Try”. The article describes it as “sweet and tart”. I personally love this drink because of the cilantro. Green detox drinks that I’ve had in the past usually only contained spinach, which became quite boring after a while. However, cilantro has such a refreshing flavor that it jazzes up pretty much anything.

Here’s the recipe:

(Makes one serving)

Ingredients:

-6 leaves of romaine

-1/4 bunch cilantro

-1/2 lime

-1 and 1/2 cups of pineapple.

Directions:

Simply throw all of the ingredients in a blender or a juicer. Make sure that you gradually add ingredients while blending to ensure a smooth texture.

2) “Glowing NutriBlast”

Once again, Prevention’s website provided me with another winning recipe. In “25 Delectable Detox Smoothies,” I found the “Glowing NutriBlast”. This smoothie is said to be able to improve the quality of sleep and fight migraines- a saving grace for most college students during this time of year. Credit for this fantastic drink goes to Ashley Koff, the author of Mom Energy: A Simple Plan To Live Fully Charged.

Here’s the recipe:

(Makes one serving)

Ingredients:

-Spinach

-1/2 of a small cucumber

-1 pear (core and seeds removed)

-1 lemon (peeled)

-1 orange (peeled)

-1 tablespoon pumpkin seeds

Directions:

Fill 1/4 of the blender with spinach, add the other ingredients and then fill the remaining space up to the max line with water.

3) “Lemon-Blueberry”

This recipe is a simple one, designed to improve the immune system. It comes from the mind of Aimee Follette, owner and executive chef of Sun In Bloom (which specializes in gluten-free, vegan, and raw cuisine). It made an appearance in Prevention’s “25 Delectable Detox Smoothies”. This recipe is just so easy to make and far less intimidating of a healthy drink than something calling for “chia seeds.” It’s definitely a good starting point for anyone who’s interested in attempting to detox or maintain a healthier lifestyle.

Here’s the recipe:

-1 cup alkaline water

-1/4 cup organic blueberries

-1 organic lemon (whole)

Directions:

Put all of the ingredients in a blender, blend, and enjoy!

4) “Matcha Mango Pineapple Smoothie”

This smoothie incorporates an interesting combination of flavors, but they absolutely work together. For those who aren’t familiar with “matcha,” I’m here to tell you not worry because it’s simply green tea in its purest form. I found this recipe on Miss Kait Online, and can’t find the original creator, but whoever it was is a genius. Mixing the flavor of the green tea with the tropical flavors of the mango and the pineapple is inspired. This drink is chock-full of antioxidants and vitamins, as well as flavor.

Here’s the recipe:

-1 and 1/4 teaspoon of matcha green tea

-1 scoop of protein powder

-honey (you be the judge of how much you want)

-1 cups of frozen mango chunks (you can also use fresh mango chunks if you prefer)

-1 tablespoon of pineapple juice (go as organic as possible to avoid added sugars)

-1 cup of pineapple

-1/2 to 1 cup of water (this depends how thick you prefer your smoothies)

Directions:

Put everything in a blender and blend well.

5) “Rainbow Veggie Juice”

For those who are more veggie than fruit fans, this is the drink for you. Once again, I found this recipe on  So…Let’s Hang Out. This recipe does require a juicer, which range in price. If you tried to blend this it would work, but would probably be a thicker consistency than what you would want in a drink. If you do have a juicer, however, or plan on getting one, I urge you to remember this delicious vegetable-packed recipe.

Ingredients:

-1-2 red bell peppers, seeded and sliced

-4 tomatoes, sliced

-3 medium carrots, peeled and sliced

-2 heads of romaine lettuce

-1 bunch of celery

-large handful of parsley

-large handful of cilantro

-1 English cucumber, peeled and chopped

-2 Meyer lemons, peeled (Meyer lemons are a citrus fruit that are native to China- they’re thought to be a cross between lemons and mandarin oranges. If you have trouble finding these at the store, I suggest picking up a regular lemon instead)

-1 inch of ginger root

Directions:

Juice the veggies, mix them together, and enjoy ASAP. The author of the blog warns against waiting to drink this juice longer than 48 hours.
