Registration changes got you down?
By Deanna Perry on Monday, November 9th, 2009By now I’m sure that many, if not all of you have registered for classes for the spring 2010 semester. If this isn’t your first year here, then you have probably noticed differences between the old and new way of registering.
At first I was outraged that they would make such a change in something that is so important to everybody. I had spent last year trying to get used to the old method, and now that I’m a sophomore who finally has an idea of what is going on, they change it on me. Obviously I did not appreciate change very much. Then again I suppose that consistency is hard to come by these days.
When I got over the initial shock of learning that I was once again completely in the dark about how to sign up for classes, I set out on a long journey to quickly get back in the know. This inevitably led me to the basement of Floyd hall. Alright, maybe that wasn’t a very long journey. I’m not sure such a thing exists on this campus. Nonetheless I did go to the basement of Floyd hall and listened to Dr. King explain the new system to a group of students (I suppose the others felt that understanding registration wasn’t necessary). It was helpful in the sense that I knew what the new system looked like.
I left the basement that night with my head mildly numb. You know, the type of numbness that washes over you when you’ve spent the last hour in an argument, but for the life of you, you can’t remember what the original point was. Eventually I came to the realization that the presentation of the new registration system left me with more questions than I originally had. Of course my head was numb at the time that would have been logical to ask questions, so I went on for a good few hours in complete and utter confusion.
It struck me that I needed to do the same thing that I had done the year before: Check the registrar’s Web page. Last year I had gone through similar confusion because there’s no way you can really retain much of the information they bombard you with during Quest. One of the main things they teach you there is registration, and at that time they have experienced people looking over your shoulder to make sure you don’t screw up. When registering for your spring semester classes, this is hardly the case. So I found a tutorial on the registrar’s page. Well, this year the registrar’s page did not disappoint. One of the first things I navigated to was a perfectly helpful tutorial that explained everything I needed to know about the new registration process.
In the end, I wound up helping my roommate and our friend register for their classes without having to look anything up on the tutorial. Everything went smoothly, and nobody had a freak heart attack. The moral of the story is this: look school related things up online before running around like a chicken with your head cut off, and if you can’t find anything there, proceed to panic.
