Fun Distractions For the Busy Mind
By Deanna Perry on Tuesday, December 1st, 2009Since it is nearing the end of the semester and we’re all in crunch time, I’ve decided to write about the things that distract me from getting anything done. This is in hopes that the general public will follow suit and become just as distracted as myself.
Facebook is a friend to most college and high school students, and if you haven’t noticed it can devour hours of your life in the blink of an eye; quite literally one blink. There’s never a dull moment when you’re creeping on an old friend that you don’t talk to anymore, or perhaps plotting revenge on an old enemy by reading their life’s story on the internet. Facebook offers that and so much for. For instance, there’s a game application called Bejeweled Blitz that I have found many people are particularly weak to. This game is similar to the original Bejeweled, but it only lasts for a minute and your score is shown and ranked with all of your Facebook friend’s scores. Since I have been playing this game since summer, my scores tend to be ridiculously high, and I’m rarely knocked from the top spot.
Next, there is My Life is Average. This is an awesome Web site for the chronically bored student. Not only can you submit funny things that happen to you throughout your day, you can read everyone else’s stories as well. Many of the running themes on My Life is Average, or MLIA for short, are ways to get kicked out of Wal-Mart, marriage proposals and people finding their “soul mates.” Yes that all sounds kind of weird and somewhat sappy, but most of them are absolutely hilarious. I highly recommend this site to anyone that’s looking for a distraction from studying.
One of my personal favorite distractions is Tumblr, another networking site. It doesn’t have games or awesome applications like Facebook does, but it has a lot to offer for those who enjoy the written word and photography. In this site you can reblog content that you find on other people’s Tumblr accounts, you can post videos, audio, quotes and links. However, I also find that many of the users of Tumblr tend to be rather touchy when it comes to their favorite music, so I suggest not making fun of any bands unless you want a lot of complaints.
Of course there’s also Wikipedia to fall back on if you’re really looking for a time waster. I’ve spent long hours sifting through content of Wikipedia instead of studying for a test. Because we all know the chronology of the “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” seasons is much more important than American History or any other class you might be taking. At times I feel that I’d rather be looking things up according to my interests rather than reading a textbook. After all, we’re here to learn.
Last but certainly not least, there’s Hulu. It’s a wonderful place to watch all of the television episodes you might have missed during the week. I know I pretty much never have time to keep up with any weekly series, so if I find the time but the show I want to watch isn’t on, I just get onto Hulu and search the episode that I missed. It’s free and the commercials are relatively short. So next time you miss an episode of your favorite show, check Hulu before you freak out. If you don’t care about television, then just go check out some of my other favorite distractions.
