Top 10 bands that you’re probably missing out on

I’m not a hipster nor do I like to put myself in a box especially where my music taste is concerned, however, I do tend to take a liking to more unknown artists. It severely pains me that these amazing bands hardly get any attention while people like Ke$ha (no offense to Ke$ha fans) are a household name. I’d just like to share a few of my favorite bands that I feel are extremely unappreciated.

1) Starsstars band

For those of you who don’t know, Stars is a Canadian band. They’ve been featured on a few TV shows that I know of- “Degrassi”, “Gossip Girl”, “The Nine Lives of Chloe King”, and “Underemployed”. Still, when I tell people that they are one of my favorite bands, 9 times out of 10 I get “Yeah, I have no clue who that is.” They have an alternative- pop feel; their music is catchy, but the lyrics are about more than just partying.

I strongly recommend checking out some of their music:

Your Ex-Lover Is Dead

Dead Hearts

Hold On When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It

2) Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s

I don’t remember how in the world I came across this band, but it was one of the luckiest things to ever happen to me. Some of their songs are a little out of the box which I thoroughly enjoy- I love bands that break away from the formula for popular music.

Broadripple Is Burning

A Children’s Crusade on Acid

Pages Written On a Wall

3) The Boxer Rebellion

The Boxer Rebellion has been featured in the movies “The Art of Getting By” and “Going the Distance”. Why this band doesn’t get more press is beyond me. They just have a great rock/ alt vibe and they sound amazing live which is always a plus.

Spitting Fire

If You Run

Semi-Automatic

4) City and Colour

I first heard of this band when I came across the song “Fragile Bird”. I was reading The Hunger Games at the time and the song reminded me of the book, causing me to take a great liking to it and eventually the band.

Fragile Bird

Little Hell

Day Old Hate

5) Say Hi

Say Hi is just a phenomenal band. They’re one of the few bands that I can just listen to for hours without needing to switch it up. They’ve been featured in a couple different things that I can think of off the top of my head- the TV shows, “Gossip Girl” and “Suburgatory” and the movie, “Crazy, Stupid, Love”.

Devils

Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh

November Was White, December Was Grey

6) Bon Iver

Bon Iver is an interesting band. I mainly listen to them when I’m writing. The mumbled vocals make it so that I’m not concentrating on the lyrics or singing along so I can focus on my work, but the music is amazing and sets the tone nicely. Their work has been featured in “Twilight: New Moon” and “We Bought A Zoo”.

Holocene

Skinny Love

Roslyn

7) Foster the People

Foster the People has had a couple hits such as “Pumped Up Kicks”, “Helena Beat”, and most recently, “Coming of Age”. While these are great songs, people tend to stick with them rather than exploring the band’s many other fantastic songs.

Houdini

Waste

Ask Yourself

8) Atlas Genius

Atlas Genius recently got popular due to their songs “Trojans” and “If So”, but these seem to be their only songs being talked about. Atlas Genius’ whole debut album, “When It Was Now” was amazing as I knew it would be by how blown away I was by their EP. People who enjoy the band’s mainstream songs should check out the rest of their work.

Back Seat

Symptoms

Don’t Make a Scene

9) The Neighbourhood

Yes, “Sweater Weather” is one of my favorite songs in the world but I swear if one more person says that The Neighbourhood is their favorite band but they only know “Sweater Weather”, I’m going to scream. The Neighbourhood has songs other than “Sweater Weather”, believe it or not.

Baby Came Home

Wires

Female Robbery

10) Death Cab for Cutie

Last but not least is the band that you will refuse to accept is “unappreciated”. Most people know of them but I still have yet to meet anyone who knows a decent amount of their music.

Tiny Vessels

The Ice Is Getting Thinner

Grapevine Fires

Some Boys

Hopefully, I’ve introduced at least one person to a new favorite band. Please leave comments below with the names of your favorite bands that need more attention so I know who I should be listening to next!
