PETA Faces Backlash for Steve Irwin Comments on Twitter

February 22nd would have been Steve Irwin’s 57th birthday. To us watching Animal Planet at home, we saw Steve as the Crocodile Hunter. But he was no hunter; he was a conservationist who taught us not to approach the animals as he did. He loved what he did and to this day, his family follows in his footsteps.

PETA, however, does not see it like that; they saw Irwin as a terrible example. They believe he was in the wrong for what he did and that when Irwin was killed by a stingray in 2006, he more or less deserved it.

Cue one of the few times that everyone on Twitter can agree with something. That something was attacking PETA for their comments on the tribute that Google did for Steve, their Google Doodle.

Celebrities like Drake Bell and Dan Bilzerian have made comments in the last 24 hours denouncing the statements of PETA while most Twitter users were pointing out how Democrats and Republicans were agreeing about how Irwin was a much better conservationist than PETA.

Users were also able to point out that PETA has a robot system. Whenever someone tweeted #donate in a reply on PETA’s Twitter, PETA left very funny replies like this one from a user: “I just boiled 3 pandas alive, y’all want some?  #donate.” PETA replied with a thank you and link to finish the donation.

Other users also pointed out PETA’s history of killing dogs and cats that were unable to be adopted in time. PETA responded to some of those comments with statistics from the organization themselves.

The lesson to be learned here is it doesn’t matter how big or powerful you are if you make comments against a great human being like Steve Irwin. You better get ready to face a ton of backlash.

Filmmaker eaten by an anaconda

A man in a “snake-proof” suit was contracted to be swallowed whole by an anaconda during a Dicovery Channel Special. Apparently, this is no hoax. Paul Rosolie, a filmmaker, intends to make this documentary special to feature on television. The promo shows Rosolie following an unsuspecting anaconda. The title of this special is named “Eaten Alive,” and will air on December 7.

The problem here lies with animal activists and other environmentalists. Does Roloslie actually intend on living inside of a snake for the rest of his life? If not, the snake will inevitably be butchered for the man to escape his scaly confinement.

Some are going as far as attacking Discovery Channel itself for giving this man a stage to tear apart a living creature from the inside out.

“A man in a “snake-proof” suit was contracted to be swallowed whole by an anaconda during a Dicovery Channel Special.”

It can’t be denied that this is an extreme stunt to pull off and is only added to the few that Discovery Channel has pulled off in the past. Some information says that Rosolie covered himself in pig’s blood to attract the snake.

According to Entertainment Weekly, PETA issued a furious statement to the Discovery Channel network:

“This blatant publicity stunt sounds far-fetched, but if the description is accurate, the snake was tormented and suffered for the sake of ratings—as animals usually do when they’re used for entertainment. Anacondas go days without eating and expend the energy needed to do so selectively. Making this snake use up energy by swallowing this fool and then possibly regurgitating him would have left the poor animal exhausted and deprived of the energy that he or she needs. Shame on this pseudo ‘wildlife expert’ for tormenting this animal, and shame on the Discovery Channel for giving him the incentive to do so. PETA has not heard back after reaching out to the Discovery Channel asking them to pull the show, whether it is a hoax or not.”

However, new information states that both the man and snake are okay. How okay could they really be though? Rosolie stated the following on twitter to possibly reassure those angered by his stunt:

“If u know me- I would never hurt a living thing.”

Trustworthy words, don’t you think?

My UGGly obsession

UGG boots aren’t the prettiest of footwear. They’re bulky, they kind of make your feet look like elephant feet, and they’re well…UGGly. They’ve gotten a lot of crap, especially in the last couple of years. I remember hearing comments every now and then from hipsters, mostly, about how hideous they were when I was in high school. When I got to college, the hate for UGG boots got a lot more intense.

UGG boots are nowhere near cute, but they’re comfy! If you want to feel like you’re wearing slippers, but still feel slightly adult while going to class, UGG boots are for you. Not only are they comfy, but they’re very warm during the winter. Sheepskin, the material UGG’s are made out of, is a special material that regulates your body temperature. In other words, you could wear them any time of year and they won’t get too hot or too cold.

I’ve noticed that through years of wear and tear with my UGGs, they’ve never gotten stinky like my leather boots sometimes do. This is probably because the material UGGs are made out of “breathes” so moisture doesn’t get trapped in them. Granted, if you wear your UGGs in really damp conditions, they will get ruined and start to smell. But I’ve worn mine in 3 feet of snow, and they still look and feel brand new.

UGGs are really expensive, which is one of the big downsides to them. However, if you’re looking to invest in a pair of really comfortable winter boots that will last for years, UGGs are a great investment. I would definitely recommend getting the care kit for UGGs that includes a spray that really waterproofs them. I never bought one, and mine still look barely worn, but if you just want that extra security, go for it.

Of course, PETA has gotten onto UGGs accusing them of animal cruelty. I bought my UGGs before these accusations, so I can sleep at night. But honestly, PETA isn’t the most honest of organizations. In many cases, the videos PETA (and other organizations) uses are from black market slaughter houses where, in many cases, the animals aren’t being used as meat. UGG specifically uses sheepskin from meat processing companies that would otherwise be discarded. One article written by an employee of the meat industry explained that sheepskin has become more expensive due to the popularity of UGGs. Companies are competing to get the sheepskin from meat companies that would just discard it.

Whatever your opinion is of UGGs, whether you think they’re ugly or not, they’re here to stay. I know I’ve never even thought that my UGGs were cute, but they’re comfy and practical and that’s what matters most to me. One of the biggest issues I’ve had in recent years when shopping for clothes is that many times you have to sacrifice practicality for cute clothes, unless you want to pay an arm and a leg. Although my UGGs were expensive, they’ve proven to be durable and trusty, which is more than I can say for a lot of my clothes.

Monsanto vs PETA: Who do you hate less?

In a society where people are becoming less and less trusting of the government, crazy conspiracy theories start to come up. The scientific community always rolls their eyes and commence work on a new formula for an internet meme that properly explains it to the increasingly dumbed down public. In the case of genetically-modified organisms, even the most compelling of arguments can’t sway people to understand that the government isn’t out to poison us.
